The Sierra Nevadas shelter a microclimate suitable for growing mulberry trees, so in Moorish times Granada was the centre of the Andalusian silk industry. After the expulsion of the Jews and Moors under Philip II, the area was repopulated by ranchers from Galicia who knew nothing about horticulture. The trees got a blight and they burned them. We were told that the "-eira" endings of the town names were a typical Galician feature. Pampaneira nonetheless retains or has revived a textile industry of sorts, and the whole town was full of shops selling the same rugs to tourists.

We were too shocked when we arrived to photograph it properly, this meant a good clear up before we left!
