After the expulsion of the Jews and Moors under Philip II, the area was repopulated by ranchers from Galicia who knew nothing about horticulture. The trees got a blight and they burned them. We were told that the "-eira" endings of the town names were a typical Galician feature. Pampaneira nonetheless retains or has revived a textile industry of sorts, and the whole town was full of shops selling the same rugs to tourists.
